Who has the most gold gloves at shortstop12/13/2023 ![]() Ozzie Smith is arguably the best defensive shortstop of all time. Although I may not have got my Gold Glove in the same way that I had once dreamed, I still ended up with one. ![]() Back when I was younger and still thought that it was my dream to play in the MLB, winning a Gold Glove was on my bucket list of things I wanted to accomplish during my playing career. Playing good defense is a form of art, and something that is incredibly hard to do on a consistent basis. But, I also felt like defense is a greatly undervalued and under appreciated aspect of the sport. Part of the reason why was because I was never much of a power hitter. Matt Kawahara is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.Growing up playing baseball, I always valued defense. Yastrzemski also played 34 games in center field, where he handled 53 chances without an error and had two assists. Yastrzemski, a first-time finalist, made one error in 210 defensive chances and totaled five defensive runs saved in right field, per FanGraphs, ranking ahead of fellow finalist Mookie Betts and behind Duvall, who led the NL with nine. Only 10 other shortstops have won four or more Gold Gloves of those, Andrelton Simmons is the only other active player. ![]() So I never really lost any confidence in my ability defensively, despite what some of those numbers might have said.”Ĭrawford said he was “a little smarter” this season about “not trying to rush or make a play that I know I can’t make.” Metrics showed the Giants excelled at positioning their infielders this season Crawford said he’ll often rely on scouting reports from the coaching staff, which is also receptive to his input. “In ’19, all of a sudden, I don’t think I became some terrible defender, even though the analytics didn’t like me. But the analytics I’ve never been necessarily a huge fan of because I feel like they’re not quite as concrete as offensive analytics. “Were there a couple of years maybe where there some unnecessary errors or stuff like that? I think so. “I think I’ve always been pretty confident in my abilities,” Crawford said. Crawford was a finalist in 2018, but not the past two seasons. The Giants had gone three years without a Gold Glove winner since Crawford secured the last of three in a row from 2015 through ’17. He started 130 games and logged 1,165 ⅔ innings, third among NL shortstops. Louis’ Paul DeJong, who was not a Gold Glove finalist, ranked first.Ĭrawford, 34, was the only major-league shortstop over age 32 to play more than 58 games at the position. The final SABR index ranked Crawford fourth among NL shortstops St. He tied for third among qualified NL shortstops in defensive runs saved (six), per FanGraphs, and Statcast ranked him third in outs above average. Winners were selected by a vote of NL managers and coaches, who couldn’t vote for their own players, and a Society for American Baseball Research defensive index that comprised about 25% of the selection total. Mike Yastrzemski was a finalist in right field, where the award went to the Braves’ Adam Duvall. But to have not won it for a few years and then kind of be told by everyone - maybe not to my face - but be told by everyone basically that my defense was falling off, I’m not the same guy anymore, getting old, all that kind of stuff, and then to win another one, I think this one honestly feels better than the first one or the other two.”Ĭrawford was the lone winner from the Giants. ![]() “I’ve always put a lot of pride in my defense, and I think I’ve said that since I came up. “Honestly, for me, this one might feel the best out of all of them,” Crawford said on a video call Sunday.
