Letterbox vs pan scan12/14/2023 The DVD for The Bodyguard is pan/scan only (the only letterboxed version is VHS). I just feel Warner is being greedy or lazy on this issue.Īnd it's not the only DVD that WB has made only in pan/scan I would have taken the original DVD transfer on the new one on the flip side. The orginal DVD was animorphic but the transfer was a bit lacking but better than any other version that I have seen. The film was probably filmed in full frame then cropped to fit 1.85 at the theatres and opened back up for 4:3 TV's and video. The real bitch of the whole thing is, I have an animorphic TV which will stretch the image to it's theatrical aspect ratio. Maybe Warner is going to transfer it full-frame with no masking at all. At least, my 35mm 1998 reprint of it is 1.33:1 with extra head and footroom for masking to 1.85:1. If it helps any, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was not anamorphic to begin with (2.35:1) it's a flat 1.85:1 film. pan-and-scan:įrom: Vacaville, CA (1790 miles west of Rockwall) Why buy a pan and scan anything? If the studio can't give you the entire picture, then they don't deserve your money. You won't get ripped off if you don't buy it. Worldwide Technical Services, Entertainment Imagingįrom: Plano, TX (36.2 miles NW of Rockwall) I have the VHS FlikFX version of "Lawrence of Arabia", which looks pretty good on my RCA 19-inch Colortrak 2000 TV set. to use the patented "FlikFX" digital recomposition process to fill the screen without resorting to letterbox or pan-and-scan: Uuggghhh!!! I just feel I am going to get ripped off if I buy it and then Warner releases the 35th Anniversary Edition with an animorphic transfer in 5 years.aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! I have one now and I my child will never know any other way. I know that the majority households in America have TV's of the 4:3 variety but when HDTV takes hold, that will all change. They seem to be contradicting themselves. However, they seem to be saying that only children will be watching it and children will prefer full screen/pan&scan. The largest fan base for this movie grew up in the 70's and are now adults (like myself). It is apparent that this edition of the DVD with all of the goodies is geared toward adults. They feel it does not need the widescreen transfer which they have done before with some of their other "Family" titles. Warner has decided to release the 30th Anniversary Edition of Wonka with all the bells and whistles except it will not have anamorphic widewscreen transfer. Is there any DVD freaks out there in Fil-Tech land? If there is, I just got wind of the most aggravating announcemet from Warner and I thought the DVD fanatics should know.
